I'm back from vacation in time to celebrate the first birthday of Sunday Postcard Art (SPA). And, of course, the theme is: Happy Birthday!!! When I think of birthdays, I always think of cake. So I just had to include a cupcake in my postcard.
The hosts of SPA, Donna and Mandy, have provided us with a rousing and creative year of weekly challenges. I feel proud to be a part of this wonderful group of talented artists. Please check out the other gorgeous entries.
I will be away on vacation from May 26 through May 31. My husband will be concentrating on historic sites in Virginia while I will be looking for antique items and vintage finds.
I also plan to stop in at The Old Lucketts Store 10th Annual Spring Antique Market (May 30-31). I hope I score some great vintage treasures. Have a wonderful week!
Numbers is the theme on Sunday Postcard Art this week. It appears that the little girl, in my postcard, is trying to hold back time. In this hurried-up world of ours, I think that we all are trying to savor a little time for ourselves. I still can't believe that the month of May flew by so quickly.

I enjoyed creating Art for Michelle Ward's Crusade No. 31: Make It Your Own. I took a free image that I got off the Internet and transformed it into a black& white stencil. Then, I created a background for the stencil with decorative paper scraps which I reworked with paint and rubber stamps. Last, I added text cut from magazines. Here's my final piece and the original image below it.

I'm participating in a Marie Antoinette 4 x 4 Swap. I finished gluing the images on the cards which is the mechanical portion of the project.. Now, I'm ready to embellish and be creative. So let the embellishments begin!
I only had time for a quick watercolor painting today. I had to take my Shih Tzu, Tia, to the Vet this morning.
This was her second Vet visit in two weeks - She has a UTI. Hmmmmm.....Gave the Vet $159. last week and $116 this week. Did you ever notice that big bills seem to come in bunches. We just replaced our ride-on lawn mower and then our air conditioning unit needed $600. of repair work. And the unit is less than five years old. I know these financial bumps in the road happen to everybody.
I think I need to set aside a few more hours, later on, to make more Art to soothe my soul. I find it very healing to work at my Art. So, here's my little coffee cup painting. I played around with the colors in Photoshop Elements.
I found the sweetest idea for Spring Place Cards at Paper Valise. Janice even provides a detailed tutorial (with variations) for readers to follow.
She suggests using the Place Cards for wedding receptions or birthdays. But the small pots are so cute, you might just want to make them for yourself to brighten up your own nest.

One of my goals for 2009 is to sketch daily so I regularly search out new drawing sites. The Pen, Ink and Watercolor Wash Sketching site offers readers free miniature sketch books.

This week, on Sunday Postcard Art, the theme is Alice in Wonderland . The latter is my favorite fairy tale. It would be fun to visit such a nonsensical and make-believe world. And I would love to participate in a Mad Hatter Tea Party. I even believe in un-birthdays. We are known to celebrate such events in our own home.
For my postcard, I decided to go with a vintage Alice. Make sure you visit the other artists' lovely postcards. Donna's sample piece is such a delight.
When I look at mixed-media magazines, and the Web sites/blogs of artists and crafters, I notice that hearts frequently appear in creative works of art. I'm also very fond of hearts and regularly use them in my art.
Make Art from the Heart may sound like a cliche but I do believe we create our art from the deepest parts of our soul and spirit. And that this passion shows through in our creations. Whenever I finish an art piece, I always feel a profound sense of satisfaction - similar to a big sigh of contentment. I guess that's why I enjoy creating art daily.
This morning, I played with some heart shapes just for fun. What did you create today?
Anne chose the theme of Black & White for the Sunday Postcard Art blog. What a challenge this proved to be for me. So many times, I wanted to reach for my pink oil pastel, pink chalk or pink ink pad. All I longed to do was add a smudge or a shadow of pink. In fact, at that point, any color would be acceptable to me.
But I followed the rules and stretched my creative muscles. I decided that's what art is all about: taking chances and experimenting. Thanks Anne for coming up with this unique challenge. Go see what the other artists did.
When I work on a collage or mixed-media art piece, I can spend countless hours (even days) cutting, pasting, rearranging and sorting through my ephemera.
Today, I decided to create a quick collage with the scraps on my Studio table. It was fun to experiment and the exercise gave me ideas for future bigger and more involved mixed-media pieces.
