Here’s to a new year of possibilities, ideas and fresh
starts. I’m always trying to come up with various ways to increase my
creativity. Here are a few ideas that I’ve tried:
out some books, from your personal library, which you haven’t looked at in
while and casually glance through the pages. Exposing yourself to new
images and words can trigger your imagination. Before you know it, you’ll
start creating networks of ideas. Make sure your art journal is nearby so
that you can capture those ideas before they slip away. I especially like to use art books, or past issues of Somerset Studio, for this exercise.
- Do nothing. Allow your mind to simply relax and incubate. Let this state of calm awareness contemplate the many ideas flowing through your mind. You may discover some interesting creative possibilities.
- Before you begin an art project, take some time to doodle. Doodling can help relieve stress. Think of doodling as a passageway to more creative ideas. Designate a small journal for your daily doodling.
- Take a break by going away for a weekend or traveling to a different town, museum or historic site. Changing your environment can change your perspective and help you generate fresh artistic possibilities.
- Take time to play. Play lets you get lost in the moment and may help you gain new insights. Play can be as simple as a brisk walk, or run, that allows you to breathe in fresh air and explore novel neighborhood sights. Try experimenting with clay or another art form that you have never tried before.
