Artist: Moira Bateman: from The Hungry Girls Collection
I recently discovered the breathtaking art work of Moira Bateman.
The above dress is from her collection of nine foot tall fiber and mixed media dresses which hang from old, weathered wood and metal yokes. The dresses were inspired by Moira Bateman’s fascination with the images in Patricia Eakins’ story The Hungry Girls. The garments are made of linen and raw sheep’s wool.
On Moira Bateman's Web site, she talks about her process: "I start my work by visiting remote wild landscapes, where I collect and crush organic materials like leaves, bark, roots, shells and mud. I wrap and tie raw silk with these materials."
"These bundles seep in the lake, bog, or river water for a number of weeks. The tightly wrapped plant material provides extracts that combine with mineral mordants found occurring in the waterway. The fabric becomes stained in patterns and tones unique to that site."
"The Waterway Stained Cloths are further worked with a variety of media including the remaining organic matter, or stitching ink and pigments. The pieces are then coated with fine layers of a fluid liquid beeswax medium, heat set and pressed flat."
