- "Journals of Dreams
- Writing Ideas
- Coincidences & Connections
- Daily Changes, e.g., a journal of one's desk, daily meals, etc."
For your own Art Journal, think in terms of collage, drawing and hand-lettering exercises.
Journal Ideas:
- "Write once a day in minute detail about one thing."
- "Write minimally: one line or sentence per day."
Again, use art to express the above ideas.
I especially like the Write Minimally idea. It's good for those days when time is tight but you still want the satisfaction of producing something in your journal.
I'd add a twist to this idea and try Draw Minimally (such as a simple drawing) or Collage Minimally (such as a small collage containing only a few pieces of paper or art).
Writing Experiments
- "Take an idea, anything that interests you, or an object, then spend a few days looking and noticing, perhaps making notes on what comes up about that idea, or, try to create a situation or surrounding where everything that happens is in relation.
- Have three or four journals going at once, each with a different purpose.
- Attempt to speak for a day only in questions; write only in questions."
Translate these writing experiments into drawings, collage pages or hand-lettering exercises in your Art Journal.
Bernadette Mayer's List contains so many more ideas. Make sure you check it out and print out a copy. You just may find the idea you need when you create your next Art Journal page.
