Outside View of Barnacles
I've been seeing these handcrafted Barnacles on Pinterest and the Web so I finally decided to make some.
Design Sponge has an excellent Barnacles tutorial but it involved more work than I wanted to do today. Red House West offered a quicker tutorial so I went with that. I used CelluClay which I had on hand.
To make the process less messy, I mixed the clay in a plastic storage bag. I put some plastic wrap on the table and a mound of clay. I covered the clay with some more plastic wrap so that I could form a circle without the clay sticking to my hands. Then I removed the upper layer of wrap.
I molded the clay circle, with the outer covering of plastic wrap, around a small balloon. I tied the wrap closed with thin wire. Then I formed ridges on the clay with a plastic knife. Since I left the plastic wrap on the balloons, the clay was still wet after two days. So I removed the barnacles from the wrap and balloons - and let them dry another day.

My barnacles are wider at the top than natural barnacles. I actually spread them out to achieve more of a bowl shape. I plan to sand, and paint, the inside of the barnacles a soft blue.
When I do this project again, I think I may try working with Creative Paper Clay to achieve a smoother texture.
