This past Sunday, our Tidewater Artists Group (TAG) participated in a Sculpture Workshop led by Kathy Brazil in Virginia Beach. We created sculptures in the style of Giacometti.
Kathy had already prepared the base for our art pieces. She mixed Plaster of Paris with water and poured the mixture into large plastic cups. Kathy then inserted a wire into the cups to function as an anchor for our sculptures. The bases were dry and ready to use when we arrived.
We used Galvanized Wire (#18 gauge) to construct our armature. Next, we dipped Plaster Cloth in water and wrapped it around the wire. Some of the attendees used the plaster cloth to create dresses or hair for the sculpted piece.
Since I made such a tall creation, I reinforced the area where the base and foot meet with additional plaster cloth.
My sculpture (ballerina) is still drying. I plan to paint it with silver paint and most likely add a cloth skirt.
