Carrie Charley Brown, children’s writer & founder of the Reading for Research Month Challenge (ReFoReMo), recently held a book giveaway on her blog. I was fortunate to win the lovely picture book: KETZEL: the Cat who Composed written by Leslea Newman and illustrated by Amy June Bates.
I was immediately captivated by this gentle tale of a friendship between Moshe the composer and the clever kitten, Ketzel. Amazingly, the book is based on a true story which makes the book even more compelling.
The dilemma of the story: Moshe must come up with a composition for a music contest. But he believes it is an impossible task. However, little Ketzel unwittingly comes up with a sweet symphony of a solution.
I won’t spoil the surprise and reveal the complete ending. I do believe this is a book that will be enjoyed by both children and adults again and again. The sepia-toned illustrations enhance the magical mood of the story. The story is enjoyable to read and deserves a permanent spot on your book shelf.
