Jo Toye’s art journal with abstract art
Via Artists Network, here's another helpful article from Jo Toye on Working Small for BIG Results (Abstract Art & Beyond).
Jo says, "In my art classes and painting workshops, I instruct my students to bring paper that has been cut into pieces no larger than 100 square inches... In fact, I encourage them to work no larger than 8″× 8″ ... as that’s the size I use for my demonstrations."
"Small Quick Samples Can Inspire Larger Paintings. Recently, in preparation for an Abstract Design Workshop I’m teaching, I’ve been playing and experimenting with paint applied with applicator bottles. I do five to ten quick starts on inexpensive paper and once they’re dry I come back to them and continue to add color, etc."
"Keep an Art Journal... Preserve your small reference samples by glueing them into a spiral-bound notebook or an art journal. Be sure to cut your paper to a size that will fit on the page and still leave you room to write in the margins."
I really like Jo's ideas. Take some time to read the complete article for additional tips. I know that I'll be trying her suggestions this weekend.
