I was very lucky to win two picture books in a giveaway sponsored by KidLit TV. As soon as I opened the priority package, I fell in love with the main character, Little Elliot, a polka-dotted elephant.
The combination of soft vintage illustrations and gentle stories of friendship between Elliot and a tiny mouse captured my heart. Mike Curato, both author and illustrator of the books, artfully weaves two tender tales.
In the book, Little Elliot BIG CITY, Elliot attempts to tackle the challenges of a busy metropolis.
But he’s so small that he cannot make a simple purchase. No worry. A chance meeting brings him both friendship – and he buys his sweet treasure.
The second book, Little Elliot BIG FAMILY, follows Elliot as he explores the city and the many people happily engaged in their activities.
All these cheerful sights make Elliot feel so alone. He misses his friend, Mouse who is attending a family party.
Will Elliot always be lonely? In Curato’s magical world, be prepared for a happy ending and a new unusual family for Elliot.
Children will love the gentle stories and beautiful illustrations. The books also make wonderful mentor texts for adults who are interested in writing picture books. On an especially, chilly spring day, both books brought a blanket of warmth to my own home.
